Here's something completely unrelated to what's gone before.
I just read the story of the garden of gethsemane today, in preparation for Easter, and came across the part where Peter, the disciple hacks off an ear.
But why was he carrying a sword anyway? It's not part of the picture I have in my mind of the disciples.
Perhaps some of you theologians can answer for me?

This is a bit off the cuff, but swords are a bit of a motif in Luke at this point. see 22:38,which seems to be making some point about the time they are now living in, rater tan contradicting v49 ff. I suspect that anyone travelling at that time as they did would have carried defensive weapons as a matter of course - would be worth noting that someone didnt rather than did. So sword seems stranger to us in our context.
Just goes to show you the importance of faithful Sunday School teaching: I remember being taught that Peter grabbed the sword off the temple guard who'd stepped forward to arrest Jesus!
